I've soloed a warlock to lvl 68. Got the first mount at lvl 40 but

It doesn't need a raid, it needs a group. Still tricky on your own
though. :P
I've managed fine with this mount so far but it occurs to me that to
get a flying mount then I may need the skill lvl that getting the
higher lvl mount would bring? Or can I just buy the lvl/mount at lvl
70?
You can just pay for it in the same way that other classes do. There
is a cost to doing the quest anyway as you have to gather a lot of
Azeroth materials that might be expensive. I'm not sure if it will be
cheaper to do the quest or just buy the mount and training - I guess
it'll depend upon your server's economy.
To be honest I'm not that bothered about flying but I do wonder if
it's likely to be very advantageous on the new WoTLK expansion.
You'll not be able to fly in Northrend until level 77 so it won't be
of any use there until then.
Steve, that's great! Thanks for your quick help :)
However, this means you have been riding at 1.6x the normal speed when you
could be riding at 2x the normal speed. For that alone it is worth spending
the 540g to get the epic land mount, even if you don't want to do the epic
warlock mount quest.

I think what they need to do is change the warlock and paladin mount
training just slightly.
I know they want to keep the original WoW as close to original as
possible and not force people to purchase an expansion to continue to
play.
So, here is what I think should be done.
Leave the original level 60 quest line alone. Leave it there for any
warlock or paladin who wishes to complete the quest.
Flight, for warlocks and paladins and everyone else except druids,
isn't learned until level 70. To purchase the training, you need to
have the 150 training first. This presents a problem for any warlock
or paladin who wants to get their class mount, but because of lack of
interest in those old world dungeons have found it difficult to form
groups to complete the various quests. So, make the class mounts a
trainable spell at 70, with a pre-requisite of already having the 150
riding skill. Getting the class mount at 70 is trivial IF you can get
a group of 70's, so the quests have lost some of that epic feel
anyway. The epic feeling of a quest like that shouldn't be in how
hard it was to find a group to do it.
So, either you get your class mount at 60 via the established means,
or you get it from a trainer at 70 but only after paying the 540g for
the riding skill training.
I guess another option here would be to greatly decrease the overall
cost of the quest and make the 150 riding skill a pre-requisite to
getting the quest, similar to how druid's have to have the 300 skill
before they can get the swift flight form quest. But, at least for
warlocks, this means greatly reducing the mats required, and reducing
the cost of the various items that must be purchased. Not so sure
what this does to paladins.
