The rules permit multiboxing so long as automation isn't involved

The general concept of "fair play" is not dictated by a single game
manufacturer.  Some behaviors may be considered unfair by the community
at large even if the rules of a specific game allow them.

Personally I have no problem with multi-boxing, but I can understand
how some people think it's unfair.

Yes, I do understand the sentiment myself. One thing that seems
strange is that 3rd party software is allowed to forward keystrokes to
each WoW instance. This is essentially automation even if it initiated
from a human.

Blizzard specifically prevents doing the same thing in the macro API
within the WoW client, so I find it odd that they are ok with it being
done externally.

They don't fully restrict being able to automate via macros or even
addons.  You can still write macros that automate a process.  Certain
CC macros enable players to re-CC a mob without manually changing
their targets.  Even addons can implement some form of automation,
such as the addons people have mentioned that automatically restock
reagents whenever they tank to a reagent vendor.

Well yes, but that's obviously not what I meant. I meant automating
the actions of one or more characters from another character. This is
prevented in the macro API, but they allow it for multiboxers using
external software.

Do you see what I mean? You can't achieve what multiboxers do via the
wow macro API, because Blizzard specifically prevents it.
