Question to the techy-knowledgeable folk: is windows firewall alone
effective enough, or should I get some other one instead? And if so,
which? I've had bad experience with ZoneAlarm in the past (it liked to
block way too much) so don't really want that. I liked how Kerio would
ask me about everything; not sure what Windows firewall does but so far
it's asked me about nothing (granted it's also blocked nothing I didn't
want it to, so can't complain on that front, but I do have to wonder how
useful it'd be in preventing malware..)

I'll do some research when I get home, but traditionally the Windows
firewall worked just fine for blocking incoming traffic (which is your
primary concern to be sure). It didn't block outgoing traffic at the
time though, or have per-program rules. Truthfully though, if you're
behind a router rather than connected directly to the internet, then
99% of people already are blocking incoming traffic that way anyways.
All an additional software firewall does is protect your computer from
other machines on the local LAN.

With Kerio/Sunbelt, I can setup individual rules as far as outgoing
traffic per program, or system wide.

All in all, if you're behind a router, OR running Windows' firewall,
then you're likely running "good enough" protection. A separate
firewall product just allows a little more fine tuning is all.
