You forgot Win 2000pro.

Vista is fine if you get a nice machine. My frame rates are often in
the 200-300's fps in wow, (although flat panel monitors realy only go
to 60 refresh rate) but my machine is very expensive.

Everyone is going to have to upgrade sooner of later. XP is not going
to be sold on new machines beginning in June.

Most of my games continue to run fine on Win2k. For games, Vista is only
important for those few bleeding edge eye-candy-rich ones that insist on
DirectX 10.

Is Win2k still getting patched adequately? I "upgraded" to XP finally
about a year ago since it felt like the patches were diminishing and
Microsoft wasn't fixing issues to the same degree as XP... even if they
claim to support all "critical" security fixes until the 2010
end-of-life date.

Unless you have bleeding-edge applications why worry about OS patches?
As long as your software is working now don't sweat it. Eventually
software makers will require the newer OS but in the meantime I never
let M$ support for an OS be the deciding factor in an upgrade. Most
of the security fixes are for their malware web browser, mail program,
and media player they have embedded into the Windows OS - ditch those
and you've really got nothing to worry about until your 3rd party apps
and games require a newer OS.
