I didn't see anyone mention the most important thing with Vista and that is
>> RAM << !!!
I dont know how much RAM does that laptop have but do NOT install Vista on
any PC with less than 4 GB RAM.
I have installed Vista + SP1 clean on a laptop with 2 GB RAM last week and
with no applications whatsoever just vista + drivers it used 1500 MB RAM
just to work. So with 2Gb RAM you have like 500 free for wow and that's way
too little and you would have the hard disk working all the time making
everything slow...
I've been "blessed" with new hardware that runs vista at work last december.
I have a laptop with 2 GB of RAM and that has been sufficient for heavey
software development (running 2 virtual machines running XP, with 512MB of
RAM each; visual studio, a couple off office applications, various other
tools) and have not had a problem with it.
Vista's memory useage seems higher than it really is, as it does aggressive
caching, pre-loading frequently used application even if you haven't started
them yet in the current session, so they start faster if you get around to
starting them. If you need the memory for other things, I assume this cached
memory will be used for it. This way, it may well be that you only "use" 1GB
of memory while the task manager reports using 1.5.
That said, I was very sceptical when we learned we would get vista. I have
to admit, I am positively surprised as it is much more stable than I had
feared, on the other hand, its resource hunger is amazing. It's given me the
odd feature that is niced but not one of them is something I always wished
for while working. On the other hand, there are quite a few things that no
longer work that I depended on under XP and that I still miss sorely in my
daily work.
As a summary, Vista is not as bad as I feared but I'll stick with XP where I
have the choice.
I have not tried running WoW on my vista-work computer, at home it runs
nicely on XP.
Cheers
