I've always played WoW in full screen mode, but recently tried windowed.
When I try, it slows to a crawl, less than 1 fps,

FWIW, I always play windowed mode on my Mac, and consistently see
framerates around 30fps or so.

I have multiple monitors. If I use "fullscreen" mode, WoW blacks out my
second monitor, making it unusable. By running in "windowed -
maximized" mode, I have full access to the second monitor to check
Thottbot, WoWDB, or whatever.
Yes, this is what I want. My PC should be quite capable of handling the game in windowed mode, but something is screwy.

I played Guild Wars (briefly) in windowed mode with no problems.

The problem with windowed mode is that unless the color depth of WOW is the same as the desktop color depth, there is going to be an overhead for conversion.
WOW supports 8 and 24 bit color depth, and windows supports 8 and 32 bit color septh, so it will run fast on 8/8 but it looks crap.
Beats me why they dont support a 32 bit depth, but thats what it needs.

Games that support 32 bit color depth ive found to have the same fps in a window (eg lineage 2)

You mean 16 bit and 32bit.

8 bit colour is just 256 colours (total). No game will run in that these days!
