Dual wielding suffers two penalties. First, the off-hand weapon deals
half normal damage. Second, *both* hands have an extra ~20% miss
chance (I will round some numbers to simplify). So, the main hand has
an 80% chance to hit for full damage. The off hand has an 80% chance
to hit for half damage. This adds up to 80% + (80%)(50%) = 80% + 40%
= 120%. By design, this is the same as if you had used "both hands"
on a 2H weapon.
So...
I don't get it. It sounds like you are saying there is no practical
difference.
I tried both, and IMHO there is a palpable difference. When I was
wielding a 2h - even after I trained the skill, I missed often, and I
never could afford to. My subjective experience is that I get hit more
and hurt more when I am armed with a 2h. Not only because I wait so
long between blows (during which time I am standing around getting
hurt), but also because my ~occasional~ blows are taken more seriously
by my foes, and that isn't necessarily what I want.
I hit them hard enough to make them mad, but not often enough to kill them.
Maybe the 2h, blow for blow, is more potent, but it is also more
threatening, yes?
As a hunter, I stay out of melee as much as I can. I have seen many
hunters who love to wade into the middle, but I am not one of them. I
do my best damage with my ranged attacks and my pet, and if I am ganged
I get unganged as fast as I can.
I rely on a tank pet, on a fine bow, and on my traps. If I am
approached I am not standing around for 3.50 seconds while I wait for my
sword to do something. Hopefully my pet has regained aggro and I am
backing off to shoot by then.
My stinging attacks with my daggers may not seem impressive, but that's
the point. My pet is mangling my foes with the most savage bites he has
got, and he's growling like a sonovabitch, and he's trying to steal
aggro back from me, and I am trying to let him.
My daggers are only a tiny part of the picture. My pet, my traps, and
my cowardly running feet are also on the menu.
Stand and bash? NOT HARDLY.
So why did bizzard give us hunters Mongoose bite, Raptor stirke, wing
clip if we arent' suspossed to melee. I've read the proper way to
fight as a hunter and they all say what you say. To kite a mob, use
wing clip run and shoot arrows.
I"m starting to use the freezing trap if i want to immobilize one of
them. I"m mostly doing solo stuff. With casters i want to close with
them and do melee as I feel like I get hit less.
