Re: Flight thoughts?

I'm just about to hit lvl 70 and I'm also at 335 for engineering. I'm
thinking of skipping the 900G cost to buy a normal flying mount and spend
the money on mats to level engineering to 350 so that I can make myself the
Engineering Flying Machine(EFM). Mats are super expensive, but it would
still cost me less to acquire a flying mount by making it myself. Does
this sound like a good idea? I'm also looking forward to the Turbo Charged
mount available at engineering skill 375.

I also saw that someone said that the normal flying mount allows you to run
along the ground if you choose, while the EFM does not. That doesn't really
seem like a big issue. AFAIK, it just seems like it would cost me a lot
less than the 900G or 5000G for the reg and epic flying mounts if I made the
engineering flying mounts.

Am I missing something here?

Well, before you can learn to fly, you have to learn to ride a swift
land mount. Look in your skills tab, you will see your riding skill
is much like other skills you have, where you can't use certain mounts
without the requisite riding skill.

If you've been riding around Outland on a 60% speed mount all the way
to 70, you've screwed yourself. In order to buy the 225 riding skill
just to be able to fly, you have to first buy the 150 riding skill.
Everything here is in increments, and you can't just skip 1
increment. The 150 skill costs 600g with no discounts, but I am
betting you are at least revered with your home capitol city, that
will give you a 15% discount on your riding skill, so it will only
cost you 510g. You can then buy an epic land mount for 100g with no
discount, or 85g with at least revered reputation.

Once you hit 70 and want to start flying, go to your factions town in
SMV to find the flight trainer there. The 225 skill will cost you
800g, no discounts available. The 60% flying mount will cost you
100g, also no discounts available. If you would rather have the
flying machine mount, you still have to buy the 225 riding skill. So
if you want to see what is cheaper to acquire, you need to compare the
costs of the flying mount (60g) with the cost of the mats to produce
the flying machine. You can't figure the cost of training into either
side, as both sides require you to obtain that training.

Same goes for the 300 riding skill. If you ever want to fly the
faster flying machine, you first have to buy the 300 skill training.
That costs 5000g. The cost of a flying mount from your faction will
be 200g. So compare 200g to the mats to make the faster flying
machine. I am betting just buying the mount is cheaper.

But I can tell you a few things to make the decisions here easier.
First, gold is limitless in this game. Its not like real world money
where there is a finite amount of cash. In WoW, gold is made anytime
you loot a mob, or sell anything to a vendor, or complete a quest that
awards gold. Gold is destroyed anytime you buy from a vendor,
purchase training, or complete a quest that requires you to turn in
some amount of gold. What I am saying is don't worry about spending
gold because you can always go out and make all that gold back
easily. Second, its always nice to have something that shows off any
hard work you have done. Warlocks and paladins got to show off fancy
mounts only available to their class, and at level 60, those mounts
were not easy to obtain. I knew more than a few warlocks who never
got their dreadsteed because of lack of groups or failure, or just
lack of motivation to obtain it. They would just buy the training and
a commonly available land mount and go on playing. Now at 70, the
dreadsteed event is so easy to complete with a few 70's in the group
that you see a lot more warlocks with this mount. Leveling
engineering is no easy task. It will take a lot of time and a lot of
gold to get your engineering to a point you can make these machines.
Might as well show off your hard work and make one.
