Re: Warcraft II will not install on XP

I would view Windows as like a new house that comes pre-infested with
termites and dryrot. There will come a time when there is less
structural wood than fungus and bug barf, and burning it down for a
fresh start is the only option. That sounds like your brother's PC now.
You *might* be able to fix the root problems with tons of research and
continued hacking at OS repair, boot file config investigation, registry
clean ups, countless reboots, etc, but after 5, 10, 20 hours of that it
becomes obvious that reinstallation is much quicker.

On the next go-round XP should last longer with much better education on
your brother's part -- anti-virus running constantly with updates, OS
updates, replace IE with Firefox or something else, don't use Outlook
Express ever, avoid random executables, don't surf porn with an
administrative account, etc. Or use Windows only for games and another
OS for everything else.

Sorry for the negative advice.

No arguments at all, I'd totally agree. A clean install is way less time
and effort.

Still, with the system (and owner) being what it is, any suggestions to
cure this problem without a reinstall would be great.

I can;t remember if Warcraft 2 was a DOS game, if so, try a boot-disk. You
can make these with UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD), which can be downloaded for
free.

Else I would back-up all of you brothers *ahem* internet collages,
downloaded educational movies and all, format the harddisk and reinstall the
pig called XP.

Believe me, we all have been there, and we all know a clean install works
best.
