the backup util thats included with windows backs up all the
files/folders to a single file thats in microsofts own format. however,
since the tool is included and readable with all copies of windows...its
not really an issue. :)

So it's a format where I can easily get the stuff back out of it? These
tools never make stuff like that clear so I tend to avoid them and stick
with the simple options ;-) The last thing I want is to do a backup, then
need it and find myself with an unreadable/unopenable file...

Agreed. I just recently stopped using NTBackup (the one MS provides) on my
servers and replaced it with BackupPC on Linux, which backs up multiple PCs
and keeps only one copy of duplicate files (so N copies of Windows only
take up the space of one copy).

For home use, I'd just use the folder copy to an external USB drive. You
can get most of the important stuff by grabbing the Documents and Settings
folder, as that includes all users' My Documents, bookmarks (all browsers),
and application settings for the well-behaved apps.

The less well-behaved apps keep their settings with the app, and WoW is one
of those. (Vista is attempting to fix this and, while I'm not ready to
upgrade, I do applaud MS for pushing apps towards this better separation of
code and data, and towards better multi-user support.) For those apps, you
need to drag the whole app folder from Program Files, or at least the parts
you customized.

If you need compression to fit the backup, just use Zip or some other well-
known archive format.
