you really should. hard drives are cheap these days, and you even stated you already have an external hd.

under windows xp you can go to the start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools. from there there is a backup option. its fairly straight forward and will allow you to choose which folder(s) to back up and to where (you can choose a folder on another drive). you can even save the backup profile and schedule it through the window scheduler service to backup at certain times/days so you never have to think about having to keep your files up to date.

at the very least you can copy folders onto the external hd directly without any additional software then copy back as needed.

while mediums to back up on is cheap, your data is priceless. insuring that its there and will be there should something happen should always be ones first priority! :)
