To drop an item, left-click it to pick it up and drop it on the main
screen.

That gave me a "do you want to destroy", it didnt drop it.

But that's what you do if you want to discard an item without selling it or
using it. Once you drop an item, you can't pick it up again. Not the same
one, anyway. If you sell an item and immediately realize you should have
kept it, you can buy it back from the buyback tab. If you
discard/drop/destroy an item and wish you hadn't, you have to replace it by
other means--either abandoning/acquiring the quest, grind for a replacement,
or purchase a new one from a vendor or the AH.

I'm unsure what you mean by "hide" an item.

In some online worlds you could go to a corner where people were unlikely
to go, drop items, logoff. Login as another character and go there to pick
up the items. Apparently WoW has "fixed" that (it was a problem for
servers).

No, you can't do this. Nor can your corpse be looted.
