My wife and myself are going to start WOW. We are both over 40 and might
be classified as not having the faster reflexes/reactions when playing,
esp my wife, and so want to get started in a way that is enjoyable.

When looking at realms, the normal role-playing (non-PVP) looks like a
good choice for us.
Question, there are so many active realms (servers yes?) out there how do
we find one that would be a good choice for us?
What does 'population' indicate on the realm status page
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/realmstatus/

Another question, does the game support microphones for player to player
(team?) communications? We have these, but are they used with any
frequency or recommended, or not?

Any other suggestions or information for newbies on things to consider or
do or avoid to make getting started gameplay more enjoyable?

TIA!

Some things I'll add to others' advice: When you choose your realm, keep the time zone in mind. If you play late in the evening to past midnight, you might want to choose a realm in a time zone earlier than you're in--not that it makes ~that~ much difference, because there are players from all over on each realm, but "realm time" can matter. I live in Central and first played on a Pacific zone. Lots of the "Looking For Group" requests popped up just as I was getting ready to quit for the night.

This sounds good advice, assuming that the OP is from America/Canada :)

If in europe check http://www.wow-europe.com/en/index.xml , Asia has yet another set of servers, no idea what their web site is.

The realms are named the same (or at least the original ones were back at release, I spent ages trying to log onto the official stormrage forums... on the USA site)

Check whatever site is relevant to you and look in the 'Newcomer' forum, or 'Welcome to Wow' forum, (the 2 sites have slighty different names/layouts). There you will find lots of info for new players.

And if you are in Europe make sure you pick a realm that is for your native language, or one are reasonably fluent in, before deciding on PVE/PVP/PVE-RP/PVP-RP. In europe there are English/French/German and Spanish servers (maybe more?), I know it sounds obvious but there was a post on the support forums ages ago from somebody from eastern europe who spoke english reasonably well, but since the instructions say 'Pick a realm closest to you' joined a German server, and they didn't speak any German :)
