Personally I think this is going to be a major irritation, but we'll have

Text chat at least requires some effort to type, thus keeping messages
short,
but voice chat will encourage people to emit a constant stream of
meaningless
crap.
I wonder how long it's going to take the gold farming spammers to figure
out
a way to write an addon that tries to open private voicechat with people
to
start spamming them?
Sure, we'll have the option to turn it off, but I expect there will be
peer
pressure to have it turned on.
During battlegrounds and instances, it might be useful, but only with a
party
that uses it effectively. I can just imagine playing an instance and
listening to somebody blather on about how he's having problems with his
girlfriend for two hours.
I suppose we'll just have to see.

Some parts I agree, other parts I don't.
Gold spammers sending private voice chat invites won't be any more
annoying than the raid invites that they send out now.
As for peer pressure, I have a microphone and ventrillo, but when
someone mentions voice chatting I typically give one of the following
reasons why I can't:
1. Don't have a mic, if they don't know me, they don't know I have
one.
2. Mic is broken, no way for them to prove this.
3. Baby is sleeping, even though I don't have a baby, again if you
don't know me personally, they have no way to know I don't have a
baby.
4. Wife is sleeping, no one argues with wife threat reduction talents.
5. I don't want to listen to you blabber on about stupid *** when
we're trying to down a boss. I've been in groups with voice chat
before and its rather annoying when we're fighting a boss for the
other people to be yacking and suddenly see the tank drop because one
of those yackers was the priest. If I know the group, and know what
they're going to really talk about, I'll simply tell them what I
really think.
Also, I thought I remembered reading somewhere, and I might be wrong
about this or confusing it with something else, that as part of the
voice chat feature, you can mute specific players. So, if you got one
guy whining about his girlfriend, mute him when you're not in bos
fights or whatever.
