Aside: Yeeeeeaaaaars ago a friend was sending out letters of application
for a teaching position. She showed me the letter before mailing it out,
and I pointed out that she had 'probably' mispelled 'probly'. She looked
disgruntled, was quiet for a few seconds and then said, "I'm sending it out
this way anyway."

She didn't own a dictionary. This was pre-internet. She was a teacher.
This was an application letter sent to every school she was interested in.

**No one** contacted her for an interview. Was it because of the
misspelling? Maybe not, but I've heard more than one potential employer say
they toss any applications that contain noticeable errors as it quickly
reduces the number one has to deal with, and you've got to start
*somewhere*.

I certainly would be reluctant to hire anyone who did that for any job
more demanding than fast food service.
