Just an informational post, so that people are aware that this kind of
stuff happens.

One of our guild members just discovered that his account has been
hacked. Two of his most senior characters, a 70 Druid and a 66 Warrior
have been transferred without his knowledge or consent to a different
server. He has notified Blizzard, and is having some professionals
examine his machines for keyloggers and other spyware.

Our friends and family include a private investigator and a fairly
high-powered attorney, so if there's a way to find the perptrator and
make him uncomfortable, I imagine we'll find it. Please don't trouble
me with lectures about how it's "only a game"; this guy has Multiple
Sclerosis and WoW is his main way of maintaining contact with friends
and family. Whoever did this is really screwing with someone's life.

Not much more to say about it, other than be careful what you download
and practice good security habits with your systems and your accounts.

Interesting, most account hacks to my knowledge involved the person
vendoring/disenchanting everything and mailing everything and all the gold
off the toon, leaving a naked toon with no gold. I've never heard of a case
where somebody transferred the toon...I wonder if Blizzard will transfer it
back for him.

I guess they wanted to transfer the toon's wealth to one of their own toons
on a different realm, but I must ask...how did they pay for the transfer?
Using their own credit card? If so, then they're ****ed. If not, maybe a
stolen CC?

Some bandits are truly dumb, this is like the classic story of the guy who
put a $100 bill on the counter of a store and asked for change, then when
the cashier opened the drawer stuck them up and made off with the cash
drawer, which contained about $50...and they left their $100 bill on the
counter.

We also had a funny incident here in the city a few years back, somebody
from out of province went through a photo-radar intersection and set off the
speeding camera. He came back and blasted at the camera with a shotgun, but
failed to destroy it. The police were easily able to look him up via his
license plate # on the photos and cross-reference it to his family here in
town. The funny part - out of province plates do not receive tickets from
the cameras, had he just let things be he would've been fine :)

Or better yet the urban legend (may be true, dunno) about somebody who tried
to steal an ATM by chaining it to the bumper of their truck. Try as they
might, they could not get it free, only ended up ripping the bumper off the
truck, and due to making such a horrendous ruckus, they panicked and took
off...leaving their bumper with the license plate on it chained to the
ATM...- Hide quoted text -

That ATM story is true, saw the surveillence video on one of those TV
shows that show crimes caught on tape.

Chances are, whoever stole his account information is in China, so
even if you do catch him, there probably won't be much you can do
about it.

The other issue might be that he is a character seller who uses the
buyers credit card for the transfer charge.

But from your description, it sounds like they transfered servers
without transferring the character to another account, which could
indicate the person who hacked the account sold the account
information to someone else, who thinks they have a legitamate account
and transferred the characters to another realm. This is the most
likely scenario. So the person you catch, if you catch them, will
only be guilty of recieving stolen property.
