Re: WoW on BBC on 'cheating'

Not necessarily. For that to be true, you need to explain how
Blizzard creating 1000g in the economy via a GM .create command or
whatever has any different effect to a gold-farmer creating 1000g in
the economy by bot-farming. The net result is exactly the same -
1000g added to the economy for negligable effort.

The limiting factor for Blizzard creating gold is how much *real
world* money people are prepared to spend on game gold. The
inflationary effect of gold created in the economy can therefore be
balanced by tuning the real world price of that gold. If it's too
cheap, too much gold will be bought and the risk of inflation
increases. If it's too expensive, gold-farming remains profitable
and the problems of farmers and bots will persist.

There are 2 significant differences between the Farmer production of gold and the proposed "Blizzard" production of gold -

1) if Blizzard do a .Create they inject 1000g into the economy. Farmers will farm for, perhaps 350g of cash and get 200g (vendor value) of drops which they then sell on the AH for 650g and then send to the purchaser - they have only injected 550g into the economy and they have increased the supply side as well as the cash side in doing it. Basically the gold farmers are doing nothing that any player could not do ( though by botting they maybe do it more hours per day ) so they don't break the economy in the way a pure cash injection would.

2) if, as suggested, Blizard legitimise gold sales, and do it at say 1/5 the price that the farmers do it for, the number of gold sales would increase - I would suggest they would go through the roof but have no evidence for that other than a gut feel.

So where currently we have a farmer selling 1K but actually only introducing 550 into the economy (and introducing supply materials as well as cash) we would have Blizzard introducing say 5k into the economy as pure cash and the supply side would have been diminished - if that doesn't cause inflation then I am an Orc in real life.

My concern is that if you start "tuning" the price of gold to prevent the inflation it will be high enough that the farmers can undercut you and still make a profit - again all this is speculation, I don't have the information (or time / inclination) to do any real analysis on it, but I don't see Bliz introducing ways to significantly shortcut content (which is what gold buying is all about) because that eventually shortens subscriber life.

P.S. I am not sure if anyone is interested in all of this, but I have one alt that I play specifically to make gold, a level 5 with enough time on /played to be a level 70. This alt supplies all my materials such as Primals etc and has a target of getting to 25K gold before I start getting epic flyers - I enjoy the "market" side of the game nearly as much as the levelling (and certainly more than the mote-grinding)

P.P.S. alts with odd targets is one of my foibles, I also have a level 1 who managed to ninja the arena trinket from 3 level 70s.
