the corpes, and the guy was skining in the interval between my looting
and my immediate right clicking to skin. I was trying to do this as
fast as possible because I knew what they guy was doing. Sometimes I
beat him. Sometimes he beat me. It made me suspect he had some add-on
that allowed to jump right in the moment after I had looted.

I always shift-right-click to auto-loot all items off the corpse then
shift-right-click again to skin. If you do these 2 clicks close
together there's little chance of anyone else ninja-skinning your
kill.

I know this has to do with looting, but sometimes I think it's a bug. ... For example, if you need one more widget and you kill two beasts that drop it before looting either one, and they both drop that item, then you'll get the item from the first one but of course not the second one since you don't need it anymore. ...
