Why do you give a shit about any of that stuff? DPS, damage/swing, weapon
speed, they're all totally irrelevant because *you're a mage*.
I would trade the staff in in a second but I can't lose the mana boost.
That's were the enchanting comes in.
If you're
standing there swinging your sword or staff at something, you're Doing it
Wrong.
I never thought someone would agree AND disagree with me at the same time.
:) That is exactly my point. Standing there swinging swords like a
warrior IS a last resort. That why I want a high dps, low speed weapon like
sword (a dagger with the same stats would be good too).
The wand is a good offensive weapon but it has certain problems that make it
a bad defensive weapon. I'll talk about that next para.
If you're out of mana or want to finish off a mob that's at 2%, that's
what your wand is for. The only thing to look for on a weapon is stats.
Let me give you a scenario. You've got a mob (say Stitches) down to %15
health. But you're health is only at %10. Ohh crap, your out of mana and
Stitchyboy is still swinging hard. You've got a Greater Healing potion
mapped to your interface. You step back and gulp down the potion. Health
is at %40, but Stitches is still coming and he hits hard. Options. You've
got a sword on one hip, and a good DP Fire Wand on the other. Which do you
chose? The sword and here's why.
The central problem with wands is this: While your using them you can't use
anything else. In other words, every time you swing that wand ALL (and I do
mean all) of your spells goes into a 1 to 2 second cooldown period. That
doesn't seem like a long time, but trust me, its an eternity.
A sword is instant damage with no cooldown timer on my other spells or
potions. While I'm swinging it, I can cast a spell and keep on swinging.
While I'm swinging the wand, all I can do is swing the wand. Everything
else is locked out for those 2 seconds. Including my other potions. If AI
gives me some mana back, I can cast a spell right away and go right back to
playing warrior. :) The wand makes me wait.
Don't get me wrong. The wand is a good offensive weapon. I love my wand.
But I only use it when: I'm in a group/instance and I'm low on mana; arrgo
is not on me and I can fire without taking damage; I'm fighting a low lvl
mob and I want to save mana for a bigger fight down the road; or when I'm
fighting a mob I know I can take down easily (lvl 30 or less).
Back to the fight. This time I went for my wand instead of my sword.
Arcane Intel finally gives me enough mana to use Fire Blast on Stitchy to
finish him off, but I can't do it because my wand is in use. I have to
press the start/stop wand button ('+' on my keyboard) to stop the wand from
firing, wait until the cooldown timer runs out for all my spells, then fire
off FB. That's 3 whole seconds. I'm standing in the cemetery by now
checking the minimap for my corpse. :(
Bottom line is: A good high DPS sword is just as useful to mages as it is to
the warry, pallys, and hunts.

Hit escape to stop the wand from casting...but, as someone else said -
drink a mana pot, not a health pot.
....and don't fight Stitches. :-p
