My guild was in the same position, except I was an officer then and
voted to restrict alts. The reasoning is thus:-
The goal is to raid end games with the understanding that it gets
To beat harder instances players need to get better AND be better
To get to the end game faster it is essential that the main characters
are geared as best as possible and loot is not diluted to characters
that are not played.
Someone on this thread sugggested that the items are not diluted
because the player can play the character anyway. The counterpoint is
that they can only play one character at a time, they can choose to
play a character that wears 80% of the best gear in the game, or have
two characters that have 60% of the best gear in game but only play one
However, people change their minds, and get tired of their classes. So
there is a rule where you can change mains unconditionally once. And
everyone past that subject to review.
Guild leadership looks out for the guild, and oftentimes it must weight
the benefits for the guild over the individual wants of a guildie. In
the end, people are free to chose their guilds and guilds are free to
chose their direction.
On a tangent, I seen multiple guilds fail because they want to bring
alts and they manage to gear up 2-3 chars and stalled on MC or BWL.
Then it fell apart due to lack of progress.
