I had exactly the same problem. I solved it but the solution was bizarre.
If you have a recordable CD drive, simply make an exact copy of *ONLY* the
troublesome disk and then re-try the installation using the copy CD rather
than the original. This did the trick perfectly After umpteen previous
failed attempts at installation
Good luck and keep on trying - trust me its well worth it ! :-)))))

I have been trying for nearly 2 weeks now to install WoW on my brothers
PC. Thought I would share my experiences.
First off, I'm pretty computer saavy (I write programs for a living).
At some point during the installation process I get an error similar to
this: 'an error was detected verifying the contents of <some
file.mpq>' where <some file.mpq> might be terrain.mpq, or sound.mpq, or
something else, but always .mpq extension.
This machine is a Dell DXP051, Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia
6800 graphics card. Windows XP Media Center Edition. It is not some
slow, low end, inadequate machine.
I found instructions from Blizzard for copying all the install files
onto a local directory and installing from there (completely by-pass
the CD-ROM drive). No luck. Same error.
I reboot the machine in safe mode (no virus checkers, no firewall,
nothing else running at all) and try installing again. No luck. Same
error.
Tried running scandisk and defrag on the HD. Nothing wrong with the
HD, and plenty of room.
Tried running the Microsoft memory diagnostic for several hours. No
probs. Memory is fine.
Returned the disks to the store, fought with the sales clerk, obtained
a completely new copy of the game with new disks. Tried all of the
above with the NEW set of disks. No luck. Same error.
I have searched the various forums and news groups, from what I can
gather: 1. A lot of people have had this problem. 2. There is
something wrong with the Blizzard file decompression routine for the
MPQ files. 3. Blizzard has no interest in solving this problem.
Well, thats it. Just wanted to vent. Guess we're off to get our money
back. Shame on you, Blizzard.
