Re: PING: Former AGDers

I have decided that when Blizzard hits out another D2 ladder I am going
to head over to WOW. My playing time will be very limited for a little
while but eventually I might be able to find the time. And I might be
able to get my wife to share some of the characters wth me on the
account I make. She has been a pretty decent D2 player and has some
free time to move them along while I am busy at work or whatever.

Remember, if the wife gets addicted, you can register another account
with the *same* personal info and transfer the wife's character to the
new account. It's important that the personal info be the same between
the two accounts, otherwise chances are that you won't be able to
proceed with the transfer. But let's save that for later :)

You'll find WoW a hell of a lot less hectic than D2, especially after
your successful HC Kamikazee mission ;)

In here, remember you cannot use placement as a tool to win an
encounter for which you are not strong enough. The game is set so that
in Player vs Environment, you cannot move effectively during fights, in
the sense that without using "slowing" or "stunning" skills, you cannot
prevent the monster from hitting you. As a result, you can forget
playing a low level character in a high level zone - it just doesn't
work.

Keep in mind that the timing and strategy is more important than the
placement. With most classes and in most cases, you cannot buy time in
combat, nor recover from a bad combat situation. The good old "TP to
Harrogath and buy pots" won't work, it's like fighting the Ancients all
the time, except that you cannot reset them.

Another note about levels: you can now see the level of the monsters.
It shows in a different colour, and basically unless you're using some
extremely cheezy tactic, which in most cases doesn't exist, or unless
you're in a party, you'll find out that if a red monster attacks you (4
levels and more above your own level), you will die - your only hope is
to run away. In D2 you could always manage a kill with some skills,
proper gear and tactics - see Hannes' UltraLow Paladin who defeated the
Ancients at level 60. In WoW, such amazing feat would be equivalent in
difficulty to a lonely level 50 managing to win in a fight against 3
elites 4 levels above him.

Yup, it's not linear scaling, if you're level 10, you cannot beat a
level 15 normal enemy in most cases, and you will have some troubles at
first managing two enemies of level 10. On the other hand, a party of 2
players should not even break a sweat while defeating 5 enemies of
their level.

So this game is a lot about teamplay, patience and strategy :)

Now given my propensity for barbs and zons and my wife's propensity for
zons in D2, what would be the ideal characters for me and her to try to
put together.

If you like Barbarians, you should definitely try a Warrior or a Rogue.
If you like Zons, you should give mages or hunters a go.

Either case, as a true D2 player, you will hate what we call "downtime"
with a vengeance. Downtime is spending time recovering your mana or
health. In that case I suggest you roll either a hunter, a druid, a
warlock, a rogue or a paladin in that order.

Druids have absolutely no issue finding parties compared to hunters. So
if you want to discover the teamplay fast, go build a druid, you'll be
eventually able to:
_morph into a bear and act like a warrior (huge damage soak, with
taunts, shouts and stuns), a lot like a mauling wearbear in LOD
_morph into a cat and act like a rogue (big melee damage, fast attacks,
the ability to stealth which is priceless)
_morph into a travel form to increase your moving speed on grounds and
in the watter
_stay as a caster, perform great as a healer, or unleash the powers of
nature from range.

On top of that, there are great lore stories that are unique to the
druid class.

Have fun!
