No idea... Perhaps they just needed a place to put a few crypt fiends
for the crypt fiend parts quest?
Plus, nice as the tunnel was, it was a bit strange that it was
completely deserted - it is the plaguelands after all.

Added to which, there's very little need for a shortcut now that there's a
flightpath from Eastern to Western Plaguelands.
