How do these Craftman's Writ work, anyway? Is it just an order to get a
certain amount of a certain item and bring them to the guy in EPL that
issued the order in the first place?

not to him per se but to another guy standing at LHC.

Is it completely random what you get? Or are your professions taken into
consideration?

completely random, and most writs aren't cheap to hand in.

Among the cheaper are probably the writs for 15 Mana or healing potions. Reason: atm you can get these potions for the necrotic runes from the events :)

the plated armor fish and lightning eels are probably also relatively cheap. Thorium tubes, rugged leather kit probably also.

stuff like flask of petrification, big thorium axe and many of the leather/tailoring writs are probably just a waste of money (except when you can use them to level up your skill). Try to sell them on the AH to someone stupid.
