My folks, who are in their 70's, have seen me playing WoW from time to time when visiting me as I am using my TV for a monitor. (I don't play when I have company, but I usually wrap up whatever I'm working on before logging off, explaining that I can lose "points" if I just quit immediately.

Recently they wanted to ask me about something that had to do with the game, and they didn't know what it was called, so they referred to it as "that running game."

I didn't know what they were talking about at first. "You know, that game you play where you run around all the time."

LOL that's a good description of WoW. Sometimes it seems like I spend half my time in the game just traveling!

Hehe great description yeah - my boyfriend says it's partly why he quit; he
got bored of spending ages travelling before he could do anything, and he
only reached lvl 30 too, so never had the immense fun of journeys like
Darnassus to Cenarion Hold (19 minutes on the gryph, argh)

Bah, you youngsters have it so easy these days...

Back in my day, it took at least 15 minutes to run from Felwith (High Elven City) across the Greater Faydark, into Butcherblock Mountains. Then you had 10 minutes of navigating the twisting valleys of Butcherblock Mountains, just to get to the dock. Then we had to wait up to 30 minutes just for the boat to show up in Butcherblock Mountains (Fishing anyone?), then we had to zone into the Ocean of Tears, IF your zone went well and you did not end up falling out of the boat (If you did you had to swim to the nearest island because you cannot swim through a zone line, and hope you can get back on the next boat by swimming up into it from below), you then had a 30+ minute boat ride only to zone INTO East Freeport (Again, hopefully you managed to zone with the boat). Then, after getting through Freeport it would take an HOUR, 60 minutes, WITH a run speed buff called Spirit of the Wolf, to run from Freeport to Qeynos, the city on the other end of the Antonican continent. This run entailed a dash through Kithicor Forest, which, at night, was a death trap for even many level 50 players. Day COULD be safe, if all of the undead went back below ground at sunrise (that did not always happen).

And, when you died, there was no choice, you simply reappeared at your bind point, HOPEFULLY the last city you passed through if you could get a kind caster to bind you there (Casters could bind themselves anywhere). AND you where completely without ALL of your gear. Naked corpse runs back through the same territory that had just killed you. No such thing as ressing at the graveyard. IF it was too hard you had to BEG a higher level to drag your corpse out of the danger for you (And pray that they would not loot your body in the process. If none of this happened, you lost everything. All your gear, all the coin on your body EVERYTHING.

Dying could mean the complete loss of a level and all associated skills. Travel involved time AND danger.

So, tell that boyfriend of yours that he has it easy!
