There are a few item-driven skills though. Items can not only improve
your brute force but also provide you with totally new abilities.

The mount is the most obvious one, an item that gives you the power to
move faster for an unlimited time, but prevents you from using any
abilities (except tracking).

Engineer is the second way to achieve this. Nifty tricks are available:
_the gnomish death ray allows you to deal monstrous damage in one
ranged hit
_the goblin dragon gun gives you dragon breath every 5 minutes
_the gnomish mind control cap allows you to make another
player/humanoid your pet.
_the goblin mortar gives you a powerful ranged AOE attack, but you must
fuel it with mithril & explosive powder every 8 use.
_various grenades gives you stun and incapacitate powers depending on
their strength, but they share a cooldown of 30 seconds and can cost a
lot of money if you make extensive use of them.
_and much more (turn invisible, summon mechanical vanity and fighting
pets, slow fall, teleport, etc, etc)
_flame/frost/shadow reflector trinkets

Alchemy is the third way:
_invulnerability potion
_speed potion
_invisibility potion
_whateverability potion

Then you have some items that add diversity to your attacks through
procs and triggers:
_helm of fire makes you shoot fireballs
_six demon bag gives a random powerful effect (summon pet, cone of
cold, blast wave, etc...)
_portable buffs! juju, e'kos, etc
_dragon chili gives you a chance to breathe fire on each strike
_you can get a book that makes you summon peons to protect you, or
skeletons, or even a timbermaw shaman to heal you and shoot lightning

Of course you have weapon enchants
_demonslaying gives highly enhanced attack power and high chance to
stun against demons
_crusader gives you chance to get heal and buffs your strength
immensely
_some weapons have chance to proc additional attacks, life stealing or
I don't know what

So, as you can see there is quite a bit more than stats to the gear
improves you can get. These tidbits of new abilities really give a new
dimension and power to your character, and the immense majority isn't
obtained by raiding in parties.
