btw, this is a real question, not just bait... :-)
I have only done Warsong Gulch, and only done it twice -- once with a
paladin and once with a warrior. Both times we (alliance) got creamed.
My warrior got 'private' status, though the paladin was just shy.
Now... why do these at all? As I understand, there is no XP gained.
There is no gold dropped. There were very few items dropped, and
certainly none that I got. It took me 2 hours waiting to get into it
both times, and the other 3 times I tried, I gave up and logged off
before I ever got in.
There must be some reason people do these? Can't just be PvP fun,
because there are whole servers for that if such is your goal.
Doesn't follow. Plenty of people run battlegrounds on normal servers
because they like PVP fun, but they like to be able to choose when to
do it and when not to. On a PVP server in most places if someone else
wants to fight, you are in a fight, like it or not.
PVP servers also seem to have more "l33t roxor" type players on them,
which can be annoying.
People run battlegrounds for several reasons:
1. They like the games. Each battleground is a different game. Warsong
Gulch is Capture the Flag. Arathi Basin is seize and hold strategic
bases. Alterac Valley is take and destroy a large objective. People
play these games because they like the games.
2. They want Honor points and rank. Winning battlegrounds is the most
efficient way to gain Honor points.
3. They want the good equipment that you can only get by gaining high
PVP rank, or by gaining high reputation with one of the battleground
factions.
4. They want to hone some particular set of skills. Like grinding known
locations, playing in a known battleground provides a controlled
situation in which you can exercise and test your abilities. You know
what you are facing and you know the lay of the land. You know your
opponents are likely to be tough and tricky. Sometimes that's what you
want when you are trying to get better at some particular skill.
5. They want the experience from turning in the tokens you get from
fighting in a battleground.
6. And, of course, as I said, people may like PVP just fine, but prefer
to have control over whether to do it or not.
