Multiple windows for chat is a great way to separate the wheat from
the chaff (so to speak).

I have 4 separate panes with chat;

* Guild chat
* Party/raid/emote/say
* Combat
* General , yell, lfg, trade, system,

It takes up more screen space, but it means the guild chat and all the
general stuff doesn't get in the way of the current party chat.
Also, these don't have to be separate windows; they can be tabs on
the main chat window. I make the backgrounds completely transparent,
too, so when there's no activity in a window for a while and the text
fade out, the window is totally invisible.
