Nope. Not with Frost Nova, Polymorph, Mana shield, Fire Blast, and
Arcane Missiles. Not even close.
CC like polymorph is an entirely different thing - it removes the mob
from the battle, so you're not really holding out agaisnt it.

Not sure about the ratio here, as I have far less experience with
warriors. Which is one reason I am asking about the whole tanking
philosophy.
The key points about tanking are:
a) Mitigate (filter) as much damage as possible
b) Keep aggro on someone who can hold it and is unlikely to die by
a few hits
Explanations:
a) The more damage is negated, the longer your team will stand
b) If someone dies, the mobs on him go to the next on the hate.
If an offtanking pet dies, the next on hate list is most
likely the healer.
Having that said, I *think* that hunter and warlock pets can be
good offtanks (basically they are a kind of crowd control for
one mob). But I have to admit that I as a tank can't help but
feel guilty when a mob hits someone else than me. I think that's
the main problem. Apart from that, defensive pets (voidwalker,
bear, turtle) can easily keep one mob busy for quite a while
without needing any attention (healing), and if they die it's
no big loss - while a dead character can be very nasty when
you don't have someone to resurrect him.
