No problem with alchemists - you're right that their potions are used all
over the place (not just to drink). It was herbalism that I was saying had
limited use - only alchemists have much use for herbs. There are a couple
quests which use them too, at least I think so - I remember some yelling
about someone needing earthroot in one of the newbie zones. But mostly, I
think they get picked to be auctioned off, hoping an alchemist will snatch
them up.

My hunter, before switching to leatherworking/skinning, did those two. It
was ridiculously fast and easy to level up herbalist to 150, and alchemist
is supercharged when you have the giant flood of herbs you get. I gave up
herbalism and alchemy 10 levels ago, and I still haven't run out of the
potions I made. Even some of the low-level potions (like troll's blood) are
quite nice. *
