Probably true, at least initially. An easy-to-make commodity like bronze
sells quite well in the auction house, and mithril and above sells for
very good money. Skinning really needs leatherworking to make saleable
stuff - you need to roll up all those ruined scraps into light leather and
so on. On the other hand, high-level monster skinning reportedly pays off
really well (I can't say yet - my skinner is only up to level 20 so doesn't
have access to any exotic beasts to use her 170 skinning on), and mining
begins to REALLY slow down after 150 or so, where there may be only a few
nodes in a zone that will advance you reliably. The great thing about
skinning is that there are targets EVERYWHERE. Just from a roleplaying
perspective, all hunters should be skinners. Besides being able to wipe out
entire populations at will, you can clean up after yourself and nothing
goes to waste. Nothing puts up a 'kick me' sign in a contested zone like a
continuous line of corpses pointing to your position.

Gatherer helps if you have dual radar-using skills, but not enough. The
irritation of not being able to leave up a tracking radar is why I gave up
herbalism. I *love* the 'track humanoids' radar - it lets me hang out in
zones where other characters have been ganked without warning. *
