This is the reason, right here. Player skill is more important than any other factor (and for this we should applaud Blizzard's design efforts).
I play a few mages and have been in quite a few PVP fights. As a mage, I die a lot, but I win quite a bit, too, enough that a warrior I partnered with for a while complained bitterly that mages were overpowered. They aren't, but when you kill a few opponents in the first five or six seconds of a fight, it makes some people grumpy.
Your class isn't the problem. Every class seems overpowered when it's crushing you. Every class seems gimped when you are playing it and losing. Switch classes and you will be up against the same problem: people with more skill will beat you. In particular, switching classes because you lost a duel or two in one encounter makes no sense. Instead, what you want to do is talk to the person who beat you, and get them to teach you how to beat them. Find out what they are afraid you will do and do that. If they won't tell you, or if they pretend that there is no possible way to beat them, find someone better to play with. Every class can be beaten; you just need to learn how to do it and then practice until it'ss second nature. Until you do that, you will lose no matter what classs you are playing.
