It's hard to get excited for this thing with the games andYou and I aren't the target market though. The fact alone that we're
functionality they showed today. They better have better, more
compelling titles marketed to Hell by the time the holiday season
rolls around...
on usenet much less that we're arguing about games on usenet puts us
in a market so niche that it's almost invisible. Sure, they'll throw
us a bone by adding voice and motion controls to exclusive games, but
the core Kinects titles aren't for us.
The target market is going to be every 6 year old girl who wants a pet
tiger cub. The question is if Microsoft is going to hit that market.
They tried before with Viva Pinata and failed pretty miserably despite
all the merchandising.
I'm not talking about compelling games for *us* - I'm talking about
compelling games for the very target you described. Nothing that they
showed is going to excite a little kid or a casual gamer who already
has a Wii.
Plus the Wii is a damn sight cheaper, if a few good looking games come
out I might be tempted to get it but I have quite a bit of disposable
income, I can see it being a flop unless they game some games out there
that will also appeal to "non-casual gamers." I do wonder if it will
allow me to control the 360 DVD functionality by waving my hands around.
That would be cool in a nerdy sort of a way, can't see it happening
though.
PS was the Star Wars thing just a fake then?
As far as I can tell from the articles all over the web, the Star Wars
lightsaber dueling app is a legit game in progress. My big problem
with it is that it will be a shallow experience in the sense that you
can't possibly feel the action on the screen when you don't have a
controller that provides any sort of feedback.
One of the videos shows Darth Vader (IIRC) towering over you, pushing
you back with your lightsabers crossed. You're not going to get any
sense of that when you're playing. You're not going to feel like
you're fighting desperately against the deadliest lightsaber master in
the known galaxy... you're going to feel like you're waving your arms
around with ease.
Like I said in another post, it seems like Microsoft is expecting
everyone to behave like they're in a virtual reality world with no
actual virtual reality chamber around you.
