First Bungie and Activision, now Insomniac and EA.
I see the Bungie deal being 10x bigger than Insomniac. In a matter of
importance Bungie to MS is equivalent to both Polyphony Digital and
Naughty Dog for Sony.
Bungie = MS's biggest franchise leaving
vs
Insomniac = some great exclusive IP's (which are remaining and will
continue on Sony hardware)
Insomniac has already said they will continue making exclusive titles
for Sony. They wont be making exclusive titles for MS. MS will get a
mutliplatform title or 3 but that's about it. You will still have to
pick up a Sony console if you want their full portfolio of games.
I agree with the sentiment, but Halo isn't going anywhere. I don't
think I'm alone in my perception that Bungie moving on from Halo is a
*good* thing for Halo. Further, the Bungie deal didn't really change
anything at all with regards to Halo - Halo 3 was *always* going to be
Bungie's last foray into that universe. The whole reason they split
from Microsoft in the first place was because they wanted to do
something other than Halo.
Insomniac is working on just one new franchise for the multiplatform
experiment. EA has the publishing rights to that one franchise. If
it's successful, and Insomniac sees benefits in continuing to develop
for more than one platform, I'm sure they'll amend that deal. However,
the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance IPs belong to Sony so Sony fans
shouldn't worry about those exclusives leaving anytime soon. Note the
very explicit detail in all the reports that Insomniac will actually
own the rights to this new IP... so they EA doesn't even have
exclusive purvey over the IP beyond what this initial contract covers.
