"Ever since the launch of the Playstation 3, Sony has taken the approach
that people will pay more for a quality product. The problem is that they
have been proven wrong time and time again, from the poor sales of the PS3
to the poor sales of the PSP Go!"
Unfortunately for him, my statement of "poor sales of the PS3" holds up.
Since November of 2006, the Playstation 3 has sold 11,401,100 machines in
the United States, the largest game market in the world. This ranks it 3rd
out of the three current generation consoles... but GET THIS... it ranks 5th
out of the 6 hardware platforms currently selling.
Hardware sales, 11/2006 to 01/2010:
1) Nintendo DS - 32,506,800
2) Wii - 27,580,400
3) Xbox 360 - 16,068,000
4) PSP - 11,554,600
5) PS3 - 11,401,100
6) PS2 - 10,452,800
Drop off 2 million of those 360's for dead units or RROD units out of
comission and youll have a more precise count of how many WORKING 360's are
out there.
Now I don't know what world you live in, but where I come from ranking 5th
out of 6 places in terms of sales = poor sales.
Having 1 system in the game and having the 3 Sony platforms smashing microsoft
2fold is embarrasing isnt it.
If you look at it month by month it gets uglier. Here's a cut and paste from
Excel, numbers in bold indicate they beat last years sales. Key titles and
events are listed in red on the left hand side. 2005 numbers for the 360 are
not included because I don't have them.

Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2 launched in the same month, November of '08,
but I didn't have room to list them both and since Resistance 2 didn't have
any kind of impact on PS3 sales I left it out.
There have been two significant bumps in PS3 sales, the month that MGS4 came
out and the month they cut the price and released the slim. Other than that
sales are in the tank.
If you look at Christmas sales, it took 3 full years for the PS3 to hit a
month with a million units in sales. By the time they did that the 360 hit
the mark four times and the Wii hit it 5 times. Two of those times the Wii
exceeded 2 million and once it topped THREE million. The only console of
this generation to do so.
At this point in time in its lifecycle, the PS3 has sold more units than the
360 in the same period of time.
To put in in perspective... The 4 months where the 360 sold more than a
million units combine for 5,110,000 in unit sales. That's 44% of what the
PS3 has sold over the entire 39 month period. It exceeds the 4,666,900
difference in sales between the two consoles.
If you add up all five of Nintendo's million plus months you get 10,610,000
units or 93% of how many PS3s have sold in 39 months.
You can break it down however you want, but the fact of the matter is the
PS3 is in last place for this generation and the reason for it is the price
was too high.
