I'm not sure ho big the "used" market is outside he UK but over here my
local branch of game (Well known UK video games shop) has a hell of a
lot of used games. If this is typical of the rest of the world then I'd
have thought that is was probably a high contributor to the whole idea
of "Project 10 Dollars" in the first place.
Gamestop is by far the largest used game store in the US. They buy back
used games, then put them up for sale in their stores and on their website.
Then there are local mom&pop stores that do the same thing as Gamestop,
fleamarkets or garage sales, not to mention pawn stores, the myriad of
places online that deal in game trading, and of course places like eBay and
Craigslist.
It's estimated that Gamestop took in just over US$2 billion in revenues
from the sales of used games last year alone.
I can certainly understand why EA (and others!) would want to try and get
a piece of that action, but doing so at the expense of annoying your
customers seems to be a very bad way of going about it.
Gamestop also sells new games as well, and works with publishers
(including EA) to offer exclusive specials if you pre-order the game
through Gamestop. These specials range from little action figures, to
special in-game items, such as a special weapon for use in Mass Effect 2.
