I don't see why some people seem so reluctant to acknowledge even the
possibility that this generation is getting well past it's prime. Hell,
assuming Moore's Law still hold true then it's a scientific fact.
Because game consoles aren't like PCs. Better hardware does not
automatically equate to better games.
Furthermore, with the majority of the market still using non-HDTVs, what
good is it going to do them to move to a new generation of consoles? They
aren't even getting the full benefit of their hardware NOW, so making them
buy another console with even just 2x the hardware in it is going
to...what exactly?
Personally, I'd rather the developers stay on a platform they've already
mastered for the most part instead of being thrown onto new hardware they
have to learn all over again. It means they can focus on the real
important
aspects of the game, like gameplay, characters and story.
I don't think it's going to be as difficult to develop games for the next
gen as it was going from og Xbox to the 360. Going from the PS2 to 3 was an
extreme undertaking because of the PS3 CPU's asymmetrical architecture. You
can bet that either Sony has a better system worked out for the Cell, or
more than likely, they will use a completely different CPU that will be much
easier to use with devs. The only thing that would change would be higher
res textures and better physics and AI, because the CPU/GPU, along with more
memory is going to be a boon to work with. As it stands right now, it is far
easier to dev games for PC than for consoles and the more consoles can be
formatted like a PC, the dev time should be faster with higher quality
games. I don't think much more can be extracted from the 360. But they can
be more creative with offering different style games or enhance gameplay on
current release franchises.
The generational transition is going to be a LOT easier for developers
the next time around. Microsoft isn't going to mess up what they did
right and Sony isn't going to make the same mistake. I'd bet that we
actually see at least one flagship-quality title on both the Xbox and
PlayStation platforms at the next launch. Neither of the current
generation platforms in question had that at launch.
