They won't do that this generation. That, even more so than Blu-ray,
is there real ace in the hole... the one thing they can pull out to
counter against Xbox 360... "well, at least you don't have to pay to
play online with our console."
They're not going to give that up. This ridiculous $70 "for premium
features" fee is their way of trying to recoup money and admit their
lack of business acumen without actually admitting it.
