Slightly off topic but after seeing this thread it reminded me of
being in court yesterday. My wife and I had to testify at a
guardianship trial because our state is basically a freaking joke. I
was already in an odd mood when I got there because I thought the
whole procedure is ridiculous to begin with so when I was sworn in I
all but busted out laughing. Why? The lady said something like this "
Do you swear to God Almighty the King of Heaven and Earth that what
you are about the say is the truth to the best of you knowledge etc
and so on. If you you lie you will not only be held accountable by the
law of the court (etc and so on) but you knowing that you will have to
face Almighty God on that infinite day in his kingdom for his final
judgment.
Now that wasn't word for word but damn close and possibly even less
silly then what she actually said to me. Now maybe it's because I live
in and around Amish country but that was the most ridiculous statement
I have ever heard in a court of law. Thankfully the lady judge thought
I was just being a light hearted loving father or she might not have
granted my wife and I custody. IMHO religion should have no place in
anything but houses of worship and not in politics, court, school,
etc and so on.
In other words KEEP IT TO YOURSELF because religion (in my humble
opinion) is the biggest problem in humanity.
Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever be rid of religion in the
public sector to the degree where it's no longer discriminatory
towards people who are not of the faiths in question. One should never
be forced to swear to any God or on any religious text if they are not
a member of said religion.
I'm agnostic and so my swearing on a Bible or to "The Lord Almighty"
is about as meaningful as my swearing on "Truly Tasteless Jokes" to
Mickey Mouse.
Can you not choose to affirm rather than swear on the Bible?
I know it is a permitted alternative in the UK, not sure how that works
in the US.
As an aside, the Bible actually provides a pretty good reason not to
swear that oath even if you were a believer:
"But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's
throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for
it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you
cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,'
and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
-Matthew 5:34-5:37"
