I think you mean 8Mbit, not 8Mbyte.  8Mbyte would be 64Mbit - and not even

Well, there goes the vast majority of the US marketplace...  The only place
in my area that does >6mbps is Comcast, but they're so heavily over
subscribed in my area that actual bandwidth is much, much lower - like lower
than what I was getting with DSL over bad phone wires.  Oh, and let's not
forget about the comcastic bandwidth limits.

Yeah, I was just gonna chime in about the bandwidth requirement..  Even
though I currently subscribe to a 15mbps connection with my ISP, I'm
not so sure if I'd still want an on demand 1080p w/5.1 sound.  Mainly
because not all 1080p is the same.

What's more important is the bitrate of the 1080p file or the movie.
There's a heck of a noticeable difference between say a 25mbit bitrate
1080p movie and a 12mbit bitrate one.

If the min requirement is 8mbit, then with the 5.1 sound, it'd mean
the movie stream would have less than 8mbit bitrate.  Yuck.  This
really isn't MS' fault, of course.

But I can't help but wonder about all those yokels out there paying
for this crappy quality and thinking it's the coolest thing out there.

15mbps who's your ISP?

Shaw.  It'll max out at a constant 14mbps or so of throughput though,
give or take half a mbit when I'm downloading something big.  This
service also includes an initial download bandwidth boost feature, so
I get close to a 20mbps throughput for about 10 to 15 seconds in the
beginning.  Not too useful for big files, but nice for files under
10MB.

They even offer a 25mbps service for like a $100/mo and I tried it for
a couple of months.  The highest sustained throughput I experienced
though was only like 21mpbs and that was only for like half an hour
during a non-peak usage period.  So, I got them to refund me the

Yeah, I'm up here in Canada.  Interesting that you say they have good
prices and speed.  I've always thought the U.S. cable companies
offered way better speeds at better prices, even with the currency
exchange taken into account.

I heard many cable companies now offer FiOS as well and I was jealous
when I heard that.  When I called up Shaw to ask if they have any
plans on laying out FiOS lines to offer to customers, they asked me

we won't have FiOS in my area for some time , but the city will get it
probably late 2010.  I found a cable plan for $20 US with 12 mbps ,
I'm paying $42 US now with 6mbps DSL

Is that $42 for just the internet connection or does that include
cable and/or phone as well?

I'm paying $99 per month for all 3 (plus taxes, fees for HD boxes and
HD DVRs, etc.). It comes out to about $140-150 per month after all is

yeah its just for the internet , I cancelled my land-line about a year
ago ,my cell plan is on a separate plan, and I get free cable at the
unit I'm renting

My land line is the magic jack, I've had it for a year and works
pretty damn good. $20 a year with unlimited calling

Comcast has a15mbps plan here,but they have a 6 month special right
now on the 12mbps plan with power boost,its locked in a $20 a month
for 6 months, I'd figure I'll upgrade to 15mbps after 6 months , but
12 is twice what I have now.

Has anyone with cable done a www.speetest.net ? I wonder if that
12mbps is real, at least my DSL regularly clocks in at 6.5 mbps and
not less than the advertised speed.

6mbps seems reasonably fast when I host Terrorist hunt matches for
RSV ,but at the price of $42 I could have twice the speed for $20, I
might as well go for it.

You gotta watch out for AT&T, they sent me a FREE modem and 5 months
later I took a close look at my bill and noticed they have been
charging me $9 a month modem rental. I called them and they quickly
apologized and credited my account for the $45 accumulated charges and
stopped charging me the montly modem fee. Not to mention my modem is
hot as hell when I use it, are modems supposed to cook eggs? I know
heat is an enemy of electronics, all of this heat can't be good. I
taped my modem to the fan shroud of my air purifier, its cool to the
touch now, all of that heat can't be good.
