I got 2 days with it before it RRODed again. Fallout 3 again, LOL.

Are you sure it was the same model repaired and did you check the serial
number? My first replacement was a totally different unit.

I'm 100% sure since the serial number matches up. :-)

They repair the sent unit these days and explicitly state that you
should expect a 2-3 week turnaround time.

I imagine that if the same unit fails a few times, they'll just send a
different one at that point but with at least the first time they seem
to be shipping back the same ones. My best friend who bought an RROD
unit on the cheap got back the same one when he sent his in around the
end of November.

One of my co-workers just got RROD and I expect that he'll be getting
the same one back as well since that was his first time.

That one lasted
over 1.5 years, then RRoDed, they sent it back non-functional, sent it
back
for repairs again, and then it died after another 5 months of play-time
in
which I gave in, got it fixed sold it and bought a Jasper Arcade. IIRC,
MS
will warranty the repair for RRoDs for another 3 years after fixing it.

Actually, they only warranty it for a year, which might not even be
accurate since the new warranty month and day on my unit was well
after they received it but before they finished repairing it which
strikes me as odd.

Get an Arcade with the 12.1 amp ratings you've read about; I have one and
it
blows out warm air and has been whisper quiet even playing from the DVD
drive. When I last checked (Dec. 13) I couldn't find an Elite nor a Pro
with
the amp rating indicative of a true Jasper, so I just settled for the
Arcade, bought a decent HDMI cable ($14.99) and then purchased a 60g HDD
from Ebay for $60. That was cheaper than buying a Pro unit that doesn't
come
with an HDMI cable.

This is likely the route I'm going to go if I do choose to go for a
new system. Either that or I can get that $30 20GB drive + Live
membership they're doing for Arcade units. I have to decide whether I
really need more space.

You could cheat like I did last summer by purchasing a unit, then
returning
it after you get your repair unit back. But I think it is best to just
keep
the Jasper and sell the repair unit, etc.

I'm skeptical that the whole "buy and return" thing even works that
well. I imagine you would have to find a specific retailer that even
allows this and I know that Best Buy, Target and Toys R Us all track
the serial number on the receipt.

Were you doing this with Wal-mart? I heard stories about people being
able to do this but they had to jump through hoops by switching out
the serial number plates and whatnot. Seems like a lot of hassle...

I did this with Best Buy last May when I had the RRoD, then with Target when
the thing wasn't functional upon return of the repair unit. No hassles
except for having to drive there and get money back. I actually held on to
the second box for almost 3 months since (in my area anyway) Target has a 90
day return policy on hardware; BB only offers 30 days. When I knew I could
actually get the Jasper, and especially after this one died yet again, I
bought into it and I am keeping it.

Target takes back open electronics and gives you the money back? I'm
kind of surprised about that as good as their return policy is.

I don't know if I could do that to my favorite store, LOL.

So you just told the return reps that the unit wasn't working or you

I've done it with a PS2 , 3 times with a 1st gen 360 at Wal-Mart. The
clerks don't even bat an eye. As long as you keep everything with it.
Hell I even went back and finally bought my 1st gen 360 and got it
home and it had my old game saves in the HDD from 1 month
ago..lol..they just put it back on the shelf with my old gamesaves and
profile..hah..I still have the same profile to this very date.

All they check is if the serial number matches and they open the box
to see if you put back all of the accessories, no big deal. Every once
in awhile they'll call the video-game dept. and have a clerk check it
because the clerk up front doesn't know what's supposed to be in the
box. They'll sometimes ask you if anything is wrong with it , I just
say 'no' just don't like it , need it.

They have to honor the return policy.
