Civilization or Starcraft.
That's going to be true in some part. However, there were other strategy
games that didn't receive sequels, and/or are long overdue for one or a
remake:
M.A.X. - a RTS that offered a turn-based mode. I wish more games would do
this. It just gets too crazy for me to have to manage units and also
trigger some of the more elaborate special spells/attacks that the units
have. I just don't have the coordination to coordinate such an elaborate
formation and attack like the computer manages to pull off. Instead I
always seem to rely on brute force and sheer numbers to win.
Masters of Magic. Imagine a mixture of Civ and Heroes of Might and Magic.
You could explore and create cities, as in Civ, but you had a choice of
different races, each with their own set of units, and your own magic
system. Combat was turn based and tactical. You had stakcs of units, and
you could use spells, like a fireball. Other spells could have city or
kingdom wide effects. There were issues galore, sure, and a few undeatable
strategies due to bad balancing but it was still one of the great games for
its day.
Master Of Orion. Still the standard that other turn based, space opera 4x
games are measured. Unfortunately Masters of Orion 3 was so horrible it
all but killed the franchise :( Even MoO2 had several issues that were
never fully resolved... Sure you have Galactic Civ. from Stardock which
is a fine game in its own right, but it's not quite the same as Civ.
UFO. A turn based tatical squad game. The movement system was pretty
easy to use, and allowed you to reserve points for opportunity fire, in
case an alien popped his head out during his move. The levels were fully
destructible as well, leading to some amusing, if unintentional,
explosions. There have been some attempts to recreate this lately, but
none of them seem to have captured the whole package offered in the
original. Either the AI was non-existant, or the movement system was
clumsy, or other issues.
Even a stripped down, so-called "beer & pretzels" version would be
welcome. For instance, I still enjoyed Spaceward Ho! (another franchise
that seems to have disappeared for the PC) now and again as well as MOO.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.
