Quirky games. Katamari Damacy was a surprise hit last generation.
Where's this generation's quirky hit like that?
LittleBigPlanet is pretty damn quirky. Portal. Viva Pinata is kinda
quirky. What exactly do you mean by quirky, anyway?
I think by "quirky" he's referring to games that defy any current
genre definition and who's gameplay is completely unique. LBP may
have quirky subject matter and unique approach to user created
content, but its essentially a platformer. Portal is a FPS that is
really a throw back to the days when FPS actually had puzzles in
them. I don't know about Viva Pinata, I've never played it, but it
sounds alot like Animal Crossing and Tamagotchi.
Katamari ,Okami, and Rez were quirky and I think did fairly well in
sales. I think you'll find even more odd titles if you go back to the
PS1/Saturn gen. The only one coming to mind right now is the strategy
game where you had to design robots and scripts that controlled them.
They are pretty obscure and probably had abysmal sales, but they were
available.
I think the buying preferences for this generation have indicated to
developers that they should focus on more action-oriented shooter
games than anything else.
Everyone is going for the next Halo, Gears, or COD. Personally I'm
done paying for the same game. I'm tired of the campaign, SP modes in
these games. I'd rather read a book or watch a movie. Give me the
option to buy these games in modules, ala carte. If I don't want the
boring, on rails, campaign grind, let me buy the MP portion only.
I really was looking forward to SFII Turbo HD. But the 1200 pt cost
and the fact that I've probably bought the same damn game eight times
since SFII for the SNES (not to mention how much in the arcades), i'm
done. Its like you need a lifetime membership for Street Fighter and
all future updates should be free.
The community games may have low production values, but atleast most
of the concepts are fresh.
Space sims. Used to be, wanna-be pilots would grab their HOTAS and dash
off in a X-Wing or TIE Fighter, or take off from the Tiger's Claw to fly
another mission against the Kilrathi. There were others as well, but
between the X-Wing/TIE-Fighter and Wing Commander series, they were
dwarfed. Now both series have faded into obscurity. A real pity too.
Those were both PC-centric games which didn't fare well in the console
world. Flight simulation type games are very much niche so don't hold
your breath.
The Ace Combat series and even back to Colony Wars on PS1 were viable
arcarde flight games that did reasonably well in their day. I just
don't think a developer has done a decent job of adapting them to be
more enjoyable on a console. FPS were also PC-centric until somebody
rethought the gameplay mechanics to make them enjoyable on a console.
