So now you can install entire DVDs to the hard drive on the 360.
Fantastic. It will mean:
Less RROD
Less noise.
Huh? The RROD was mainly caused by overheating brought on due to shoddy
soldering, application of thermal paste, and poor heatsink design for the
processors - NOT the optical drive.
How will installing the game to the HDD result in less RROD - ESPECIALLY
since that issue has been solve mostly with the introduction of the Falcon
hardware?
Two of the main concerns with the 360.
The heat that is generated from the disk spinning will be reduced, and
thus the chips sitting under the drive will not heat up as much
anymore.
Um... The DVD drive doesn't generate nearly as much heat as the
processors or other chips inside the 360, not to mention the HDD itself
(although, that's mostly outside the 360...)
The DVD drives are the main cause of noise in the 360 during gameplay,
so runnning from HDD will prevent this.
However, beyond that, there is zero benefit.
Faster loadtimes is zero benefit? I guess so, for extra-super-sized
values of "zero".
Unlike the Ps3, the 360s DVD drive is plenty fast enough to load most
games in a reasonable time. In fact, runninggames like for like on the
Ps3 from the HDD when installed as such, there is little discernable
difference in load time between the wo versions.
Strike one.
Oh, and you've tested this unreleased feature already?
And you DO know that even the fastest optical drive available today is
still slower than a hard drive BY ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE, right?
True, maybe not all games will benefit from noticably faster load times
using the hard drive, but I can think of a number of games that probably
would. Flatout, for instance, has a several second long loadtime after
every race which I'm pretty sure would go away (or at least be reduced)
with a HDD install.
What about using the 360 as a game jukebox?
You still need to put the original in the DVD drive to pla the game
from the HDD. Thus rendering that a complete imposibility.
Yeah, until the hacks appear... Look what happened with the PS2's HDD.
The final, and most probable practical application, is to combat the
lack of disk space from DVD. Installing a 2 or 3 dvd game like FFXIII
to HDD will aleviate the problems of disk swapping that will be
incurred, compared to blu-Ray.
I'm sure FFXIII will be 5+ DVDs at least.
Even then, is it really that big of a deal to have to swap a disc after
10+ hours of game play? If you really think so, you probably have larger
issues than a video game that comes on multiple discs.
But what about HDD Space?
Now we know why a 60 gig 360 is necessary. And that Elite suddenly
looks considerably more worthwile for the 120gig HDD.
But when will MS allow people to add their own HDDs rather than pay
silly prices for small ones?
A console company that price gouges for specially branded accessories?
Say it ain't so!
