So I tried to go the used route. I found a unit for $140 without any
accessories. Sounded like a great deal until I saw the prices for
accessories. 100 bucks for a power supply?? 100 bucks for a lousy 20
gig HD? M$ is raping customers with outragerous charges. Power
supplies for every other electronic on the planet are usually less
than 20 bucks. You can now get 500 gig HD's for $100 bucks. Yet M$
can charge whatever they want because consumers must buy the
product.
This company disgusts me. They rip off the customers to fatten their
wallets yet refuse to spend the necessary money needed to permanently
fix the console problem. Their greed will be their downfall in the
end.
I do still believe the PS3 is a superior product from a hardware view,
and soon to be superior in the software dept as well.
First of all we need to get some facts straight. No one has ever
claimed a 70% failure rate on the XBox 360, not in 2006, not in 2007,
not ever. I don't know where you heard that number, but it's not true.
There were rumor in late 2007 about failure rate being as high as 30%,
but those were always speculation by angry consumer who continued to
send their 360 in for repairs time and time again.
Last month (Feb 08) a report was published that stated the 360's
failure rate since launch has been around 16%

Several insider reports point the finger at a problem of the CPUs
overheating on the original XBox 360 configuration. Microsoft made an
announcement in late 2007 extending the warranty on all 360 units sold
(even for customer buying preowned units without sales receipts),
Microsoft has also since taken several steps in the production process
to greatly reduce the amount of heat being produced inside the unit
and to better protect the parts from damage. The CPUs inside the
generation XBox 360 are a different generation of processor,
technically they perform the same operations, but the design is 65nm,
it's a smaller chip that requires less energy and produces less heat
and this chip is going into every 360 manufactured at this point. They
are also using a different material for the heat sinks and different
grade of solider. Should there still be a problem, the extended
warranty is there to cover you.
So Microsoft messed up, but they have made things right and they have
never had a 70% failure rate, that is a lie and you become part of the
propaganda/ignorant fan boy club when you start spewing this.
The reality is the Microsoft branded hard drive is not identical to
that 500-GB Seagate you can buy for $120 for your PC. If you would
learn to use a search engine and stop comparing everything to the
cheapest parts you can find for PC, you would realize hard drives
actually vary a great deal in cost, depending on features. Have a look
at this model for example:

There you have a $300 120-Gb drive vs Microsoft's $180 120-GB drive
for XBox 360.
You also have to consider that Microsoft's hard drives have a unique
casing and interface which also drives the production cost up. You
say "Microsoft disgust you", yet your disgust for this company is
purely out of your own ignorance. Yes the time for Microsoft to slash
console prices is now and they will (they already have in the UK just
yesterday.... a US price cut is probably just around the corner).
The truth is Microsoft has been offering a great product at a great
price since launch. They messed up with RRoD and they made good on it.
Unlike SONY did repeatedly in 2007, Microsoft has not lied to their
customers. Say what you want about RRoD, once the data about the
failure rate was gathered, they took action and they made good with
customers.
