1. VGChartz are very much overestimating sales of every console in
North merica right now.
They overshot the official results from NPD by over 140k last month,
so you can immediately deduct about 30% of their NA figures for the
360 for February.
Why? You've got to learn to be patient. There won't be any seismic
shifts in the "console war" within the next few weeks after which the
NPD numbers will come out.
Have you been able to somehow verify that VGChartz's numbers are 100%
accurate in Europe and Japan? Where are the links to these other
sites?
They get the Japanese and European figures from GFK, ChartTRACK,
Famitsu and Mediacreate - rather than internally..
Other than that, the only other sources would be Sony and Microsoft
themselves....
Where are they getting the North American numbers from, then? How is
it that they can be as wrong as you say for North American numbers and
then right on the money for European figures (I imagine Famitsu is
pretty damn accurate)?
2. The 360's lead right now, according to VGchartz (who have
overestimated the 360s sales by some degree) is 6.87m.
In September 28th 2007, that lead was 7.06m. So in 4 months the 360
has lost 200k from it's lead, according to VGchartz.
MOST of those sales were lost during the weeks from mid-december to
now.
3. Those figures PrivatePrivate's new ID posted DO NOT INCLUDE JAPAN!
The PS3s lead will be closer to 50k after that.
Correct on the 50k comment but I'm not sure what figures you're
referring to regarding the exclusion of Japan...
The sales figures he quoted were for the week ending 23rd February
2008, and the Japanese sales have yet to be published by Famitsu so
VGchatz have not yet added them.
I figured as much. It's all a matter of timing. Right now, numbers for
both North America and Japan are a week behind numbers for PAL
territories.
For the week ending February 16, the hardware totals are as follows:
North America:
- 360 79,204
- PS3 80,214
Japan:
- 360 4,242
- PS3 19,774
PAL:
- 360 46,409
- PS3 76,306
Total:
- 360 129,855
- PS3 176,294
The totals for the previous week (ending February 9) were 139,510 for
the 360 and 180,464 for the PS3, which translates to a 6.9% drop for
the 360 and a 2.3% drop for the PS3.
As expected, the sales of software for both consoles also dropped
during this time period, but interestingly enough, the drop for PS3
software was much more pronounced - 244,389 (-23%) vs. the 360's
109,655 (-7%).
The figures that are in discussion were for the last week of sales
data.
It seems hardly worthwhile to discuss numbers for the week ending
February 23 when one region is excluded...
4. On an average of 150k lead to the PS3 every month from now until
the 360 gets it's stock levels back up (june according to M$), you can
expect the 360 to lose a further 600-750k from that lead, leaving it
at just over 6 million lead.
Certainly a possibility. The February numbers will help verify this.
5. Inevitably the release of MGS4 will see significant sales boosts in
Japan, Europe and the US from April, so that may add a fruther
300k-1million to that lead.
It's good to see you even-headed in your estimates for once. 1 million
sales as a combination of existing monthly sales lead and the release
of Metal Gear Solid 4 is not an unreasonable number, especially
considering the newly announced bundle, which is a pretty good deal
for fans of the MGS series who haven't bought into the system yet.
I would expect sales of the Ps3 to be around 400k ahead of the 360 for
May and around 250k for June too - as the trailing off of sales for
MGS4, and then the introduction of the bundle in June.
Why would the Playstation 3's monthly sales lead be less in June than
in May? Metal Gear Solid 4 hits shelves in mid-June so one would
expect the numbers would go up then.
I doubt that Microsoft will let this "shortage" go on for that many
months. I think sales numbers for the Xbox 360 will go back to normal
(i.e. ahead of the Playstation 3's) within the next month or so.
Microsoft is probably not keen on a shortage with games like Bully,
Rainbow Six Vegas, Grand Theft Auto IV, Splinter Cell Conviction, and
Ninja Gaiden II on the horizon.
6. GTAIV is not a 360 exclusive, and the extra content is worthless
as selling point until it is actually released, and that wont even
start until the last quarter of the year...
The extra content is hardly worthless. The first of the two exclusive
episodic downloads will arrive in August according to Microsoft and
Take Two. Most people will not be finished with the GTA IV campaign by
then so people aren't expecting new episodes a month after launch.
I am anticipating that if the campaign mode is meaty and as rich as
the previous games, extra content will merely be cherry on the cake
rathe than the filling.
The campaign mode will definitely be the filling. Nobody denies this.
However, Take Two and Microsoft have reiterated time and again that
the two big downloads are entire episodes that each comprise of
roughly 10 extra hours of gameplay.
The downloads are not just "map packs" or bonus cars.
I would anticipate that all it will drive are existing 360 owners who
have both consoles to choose that version.
This could very well be true when you're talking about the general
gamer. There are plenty of people who are fans specifically of Grand
Theft Auto and will likely want to get as much out of the package as
they can.
It certainly worked for Episodes One and Two. Hell, One was on sale as
an expansion to Half-Life 2 on the PC for a decent chunk of change and
Two required that people who played the game already to buy a whole
new Half-Life 2 package.
When people see that they can either get the Xbox 360 version with by
far the biggest set of downloadable content of any current generation
game thus far or the Playstation 3 version with absolutely no
downloadable content, many will go with the Xbox 360.
It remains to be seen how large this downloadable level/episode will
be. It also remains to be seen wether it will remain exclusive
forever, or will wind up on a subsequent GOTY edition retail release
for the PC and PS3 too.
Take Two and Microsoft have said that each episode will add roughly 10
hours of gameplay in the form of side stories, sub-plots and missions.
These will certainly not be part of the original story but more along
the lines of follow-ups that will involve both new characters and
characters that you meet while playing the main campaign.
I have little doubt that it will show up on the PC at some point. Why
wouldn't Microsoft want people who own "its other game system" to not
dish out extra money for extra content?
It's possible the content will show up for the Playstation 3 at some
point in the future, but certainly not in something as soon as a Game
of the Year edition. Microsoft paid HUGE money to secure this
exclusive content. If it does grace the PS3 it will be likely a couple
of years down the road prior to the next GTA game.
Given that Europe is more likely to buy the PS3 and PC versions of the
game, I would not expect Take 2 do something along those lines soon.
However, I realise that is just conjecture.
Nevertheless, - no game has ever sold based on what you can get for it
6 months down the line - DLC is a nice freebie extra, akin to a
Collectors editiln extra ending or alternative version.
Of course, this is somewhat different than in the past. This
generation is the first generation where downloadable content is a
very real, integrated part of the gaming experience. Further, this is
the first time a console manufacturer paid $50 million for exclusive
add-on content and was able to make this announcement a year and a
half (now almost two years with the delay) prior to the launch of said
game.
Fans of Grand Theft Auto IV have known for a long time now that there
will be downloadable content that is pretty much the equivalent of 2
expansion packs and that this content would be exclusive to the Xbox
360.
.But like all your XBOT bretheren, you'l find a way of dismising
everything thatmight look like a win for Sony.....
