There were over a dozen news sites a buzz yesterday about a rumor that
Microsoft will release an XBox 360 with a built-in Blu-Ray drive
within 3-4 months. Unless Microsoft can beat Sony's PS3 price points
this is a very risky move, one that could turn the tide further
against them (tide is already shifted against them at this point
because they've lost their price advantage).
What Microsoft needs right now is $199 XBox 360 Core/Acrade and $250
360 Premium model. Don't bother with Blu-Ray, just focus on getting
the cost of the current spec models down in price and making sure they
are defect free. Blu-Ray won the format war, good for Blu-Ray, include
a Blu-Ray drive in the next generation XBox, but leave the spec of
this one alone and just make it more price friendly for consumers.
Sometimes you have to wonder what the folks up in Redmond are thinking.
It would make more sense to me, considering their prior strategies, if
a BluRay add-on was offered. That being said, what would be wrong
with a $400~450 BluRay Elite model? How could releasing that or a
similar model have an adverse effect?
