No, but they can start making or using different discs. I honestly just

Why does everyone on here have to be a smartass anyway?
Excuse the hell out of me for not knowing some of this stuff. sheesh

Who's being a smart ass? I'm just pointing out to you that the
manufacturer's can't simply create a bigger disc. A lot of research
and planning went into creating these discs in these configurations.
They can certainly add another layer but both formats can do this so
Blu-Ray will always be a step ahead there since they started out with
a higher capacity.
Didn't you ever notice that the capacities of DVDs are always in
multiples of 4.7Gb or so? All they did was do double-sided or dual-
layered... or both.
If you tried to make a disc with a different capacity, it wouldn't
work in any of the existing players because the lasers are set to a
particular wavelength. The precision of these lasers determines how
much data you can fit in a particular physical space.
It might not be a great analogy, but think of a box that can hold a
certain number of baseballs. Can you think of a way that you would be
able to create a box that could hold, say, 50% more baseballs without
changing the size of the balls or the shape or dimensions of the box?
In other words, produce a box that is exactly the same as the original
box but can hold more baseballs.
Or thinking of it another way. Let's say you have a vehicle that's
storing boxes of baseballs. The vehicle has a maximum capacity for
these boxes. Let's say you create a new box that's bigger with
different dimensions to hold more baseballs. You wouldn't be able to
shove the same number of those boxes into the vehicle because it's
designed to hold a certain number of the original boxes. If you want
to use the new boxes, you've got to buy a new vehicle that can hold
the same number of boxes as before but in the bigger size.
