I can't see the use in online posting, like going through google groups,
unless you have no choice (like me sometimes). Using a newsreaders along
with your ISP's provided list is the way to go. Now, unless your ISP doesn't
offer this, then I can see that, but there are free news servers out there
that will work with just about any decnet newsreader. Even though my ISP
doesn't have a certain groups on the list, I get a prompt that says this,
and I simply ignore it and click on, then it goes.

On the contrary, Google Groups is the easiest thing for me. I'm pretty
sure my ISP provides Usenet access to these groups, but the
"subscription" type features of Google Groups (where it remembers all
threads I've been involved in, notifies me of newest additions to
threads I participate in, etc.) makes things a lot easier.

I can only surmize that you have had little experience with a good newsreader, of which is way more robust and functional than an online reader. I would list the things it can do against google's setup, but if you're happy, that's what matters.

I can access Google Groups anywhere I have access to a computer (i.e.
at work) whereas my Usenet access is limited to home.
