Because the servers and overhead to maintain and run them costs money?
The only reason Sony's PSN stuff is free is because:

a) It's crap, and
b) Sony is desperate to have something to set themselves apart from
Live, besides not having accomplishments and running slow as Hell on
downloads.

Rest assured, if MS went out of business on a Thursday, on Friday Sony
would start charging for online play too.
